Anne P. Chapin Grants
Established in 2022, ABASI’s undergraduate grants honor the legacy of Anne P. Chapin, a trailblazing woman whose profound contributions to archaeology and art history continue to inspire and empower emerging scholars. She embodied the values of ABASI, setting a precedent for insightful, innovative research, publication, and teaching, all while passionately nurturing the inquisitiveness and passion of aspiring scholars in the field. As a professor of Art History at Brevard College in North Carolina, she ensured that students accompanied her to Greece to learn first-hand about excavation, conservation, and study of archaeological materials. Anne was an outstanding mentor, adeptly guiding young scholars through the transition from undergraduate to graduate levels, seamlessly transforming them from students to respected colleagues.
These grants are designed to facilitate students’ early experiences in archaeology and art history that Anne strongly supported: fieldwork, research, and conference presentations, which are each vital aspects of young scholars’ growth.
Grants are offered to US students enrolled in archaeology or archaeology-adjacent programs (art history, anthropology, material studies, etc.). Awards are based on the submitted application materials. To apply, students must complete an application form, cover letter, budget, and two letters of recommendation and submit these to aegeaninitiative@gmail.com.
